How to Calculate CGPA: A Complete Guide for University Students
Published June 5, 2026
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of all your semester GPAs combined. It's what appears on your final transcript and is used by employers and graduate schools to evaluate your overall academic performance.
How CGPA Differs from GPA
While GPA measures a single semester, CGPA calculates the average across all completed semesters. Your CGPA is usually what matters most for final degree classifications.
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Step 1: Calculate your GPA for each semester.
- Step 2: Multiply each semester's GPA by the credit hours taken that semester.
- Step 3: Sum all these values across all semesters.
- Step 4: Divide by the total credit hours across all semesters.
Example
- Semester 1: 3.5 GPA × 15 credits = 52.5
- Semester 2: 3.8 GPA × 16 credits = 60.8
- Semester 3: 3.2 GPA × 15 credits = 48.0
- CGPA: (52.5 + 60.8 + 48.0) ÷ (15 + 16 + 15) = 161.3 ÷ 46 = 3.51
